Every year, more than 48,000 people die by suicide in the U.S., making it the tenth leading cause of death. While these statistics are sobering, dying by suicide is not an inevitability. In fact, for every one person who dies by suicide in the U.S., there are approximately 278 people who move past serious thoughts of suicide. (National Action Alliance for Suicide Prevention).
Suicide remains a highly stigmatized topic that many of us feel uncomfortable discussing, even with friends and loved ones. Educating ourselves and others, and talking openly about our experiences with suicide, is a crucial step in suicide prevention.
